My Book Review.

Hello again

I've been in China nearly two months, and in that time I have looked at lots of books but finished two. I loved them both, but they are very different.

The first book I read is "First Term at Mallory Towers" by Enid Blyton (written in 1946). My mum loved this series of books too. So you know the type of book it is the blurb on the back says:

Darrell Rivers is off to boarding school for the first time. She quickly settles down and makes new friends, including the clever and mischievous Alicia, who delights the form with her practical jokes. But the first term is not all fun and Darrell has some tricky problems to cope with: her dreadful temper, the mystery of Sally Hope's odd behaviour, and the spiteful tricks played on shy Mary-Lou.

So how was that??

Also I would like to show you this book called "Our Island Story"

It is the BIGGEST book I've ever read! The author is called H.E. Marshall. It has 506 pages and 110 chapters.
It is about the whole of Great Britain and some of Ireland from Neptune and Albion and Brutus to Victoria. It was published in 1905!!

The worst bit in it was the 100 Year War where there was lots and lots of wars that I thought were boring and I begged Kate to skip them but I failed.
The best bit was the Battle of Waterloo because I don't really like Napoleon very much!!

I hope you like my two books I have been interested about.

  1. Hello Anna
Happy New Year to you all!

I also used to love the Mallory Towers books just like your mum. I collected the St Clairs books too which were also by Enid Blyton and also about a girls boarding school. I think they were about twins.

Well done for reading the history book - it sounds quite a hard book but very interesting.
Does it have much about the Great Fire of London in it? We are just about to start that topic at school. Perhaps you would like to help the Woodpeckers with some information.

    Love Tracey Bowers

  3. Hi Louis,

Well done for reading it up to Arthur Louis (does Orla like it too?)
Kate wants to know if David likes it but she is not so sure!
I've just had a reply from Mrs Bowers! She said Woodpeckers are on the topic about "The Great Fire Of London" and asks us to help them with some questions about it.
I am now on 5 Form at mallory towers and Alicia got measles, they all celebrated her coming
back with a trick that scared mam'zell out of her skin.
Can't wait till you come from Anna xxxxxxxxx

  5. Anna - thank you for your help with our questions - the Woodpeckers were amazed at the number of languages spoken in London and we have learnt a lot more about why the Romans built Londinium in that place.

Yesterday we started to learn more about the Great fire of London and I spent the morning dressed as Samuel Pepys and Rachel was King Charles II. Do you remember when we did that last year?

If you keep looking at our blog Mary is leaving us messages about how she is getting on - this week she gave us lots of measurements about the baby and her waist!!!!
She has stopped working now to rest before she has her baby next month and Woodpeckers has a new teacher called Zoe.

I am sure you must be missing school but just remember in the future you will have this wonderful experience to look back on and you will be very happy you had such an incredible opportunity. You must be learning such a lot by being there and it looks like you are having a great time in all your photos.
    Take care x

  6. Dear Tracey,

Thank you for telling me about St Claire's, I have now finished all of Malory Towers and need to move onto something else. So, I followed your advise and ordered St Claire's box set and Just So stories (Folk Lore by Rudyard Kipling)
GUESS WHAT HE LIVED IN ROTTINGDEAN!!!!!!!!!
I want to read this book because I have been reading and watching stuff about evolution.

I have been checking the Woodpeckers Blog regularly, please give my love to Mary.

    Best wishes

    Anna xx

P.S. Kate says were you wearing a toilet rug when you dressed as Samuel Pepys?

P.P.S. I have made a poster of all my school photos from 2009 - 2012. I was crying inside my head when I did this.

P.P.P.S. I can't wait till Louis and Orla come to China in March.

  7. Hi Anna - Happy Chinese New Year to you all.
I hope you are enjoying the new books. Mary said she loved those books too!
I took Josh, my eldest son, to Batemans (which is Rudyard Kiplings other house in Sussex) when he was a tiny baby and they said he was their youngest ever visitor.
Mary is nearly at the end of her pregnancy - she has a very large bump that is just like she has a bowling ball up her jumper! We are all gettting very excited about the new baby. Tomorrow we are having a party for her after school. All the teachers have done a very special present for her which I will tell you about next time - just in case she reads this before tomorrow!
Tell Kate I was wearing an old cardigan that my Nanna knitted me when I was about 8. It was made with a loopy stitch that I thought looked a bit like Samuel Pepys wig!

How exciting that Louis and Orla are coming to visit you soon. I muat ask Orla all about it when I teach her on Thursdays.

Keep sharing things on your blog - I love seeing what you are up to.
    Take care
    Tracey
